Herb of the week! Zea mays!

September 27, 2016

As the fields go from green to brown this fall, and porches get decked out with corn stalks and hay bails it's time to look at corn from a medicinal standpoint! The silk that you discard when shucking a cob of corn is actually very useful! When the corn is green and milky (young) the silk can be collected for its medicinal properties.

This herb has a few different actions in the human body. It can be used as a weak diuretic (makes you pee), or it can be used as a sedative for the urinary tract.

These actions make this the perfect herb to combat the symptoms of urinary tract infection, cystitis, kidney stones, and edema.

So next time you're driving down the country roads and see endless fields of corn remember they can be more than just food!
